Prince Edward Island
Prince Edward Island, the birthplace of Canada's Confederation, is known for its red soil, sandy beaches, lush green fields, farming- especially its potatoes, fishing, Irish Moss, and of course, Lucy Maud Montgomery's fictional character, Anne of Green Gables. If you come via New Brunswick you will cross the 12.9 km (8 mile) Confederation Bridge, an engineering marvel opened in 1997. You can also arrive by air at the Charlottetown Airport or by water on the Northumberland Ferry. There are countless beaches with wonderful sand dunes. Anne of Green Gables attracts tourists from all over the world. Fans can also take in the Musical at Confederation Centre for the Arts in Charlottetown, the capital of the Island. Charlottetown has wonderful historic houses, fine dining and galleries. Whether you want to lie on a beach, build a sandcastle, become a lobster fisherman for a day, or take a kayak tour along any of the scenic coastline, PEI is a tiny island with a lot to offer.
